Healing and maintaining balance and health always comes from multiple strategies working in harmony. This 'homeostasis'-- the balance of work and play seems most apparent in the Arts. In 1992 I conducted workshops for caregivers of people with disabilities-- "But Will It Be Fun?-- Relaxing the Clinical Countenance" and "Playing in Life: How the Arts Enhance Us" were the titles of my earliest performances. Since 2007, I have been addressing soldiers, medics, transitioning warriors and family members and helping them to reconnect with the joys of laughter, music and play, while also allowing them an honest stepping back from the stresses of routine to rekindle their appreciation and desire for intimate relationships. My programs in 2007 and 2008 at WRAMC (COL Coots) and Landstuhl (BG Gallagher)were among the most rewarding of my career. In 2011, I delivered 57 performances for 13,000 soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines, and last month (JAN '12) was invited to address the Pacific Regional Medical Command in Korea and Japan. It seems apparent that we have to take proactive steps to continue these efforts to inject the Arts and play into e v e r y o n e ' s (patients and caregivers) routines whenever we get a chance.
